The Kaposvár University Lake Balaton Research Institute was founded on December 1, 2011.

In three research groups, natural and social scientists, experts in ecology, economics, regional development, sociology, mathematical statistics and process engineering are carrying on research in the institute, based on a joint problem analysis and research planning.

Our general aim, unifying the research groups, is the complex, inter- and multidisciplinary exploration and analysis of the ecological problems and the concomitant social and economic conflicts in Lake Balaton and the surrounding areas. With our research we expect to contribute to the effective solving of these problems and conflicts and thereby to further a sustainable development of the region based on its natural, social, cultural and economic values.

A further theoretical aim of our research is to elaborate a computer aided generalized and parameterized multidisciplinary model that can be applied for the research, and the sustainable ecological management, of other socio-ecological systems with similar natural, economic, and socio-cultural circumstances (shallow lake areas).
